The senior may not understand the risks inherent to their behavior. Seniors with dementia may forget that they have a pot on the stove and start a fire. Seeing burned pots on the stove may give an indication. Pots and pans on the stove may contain food that is spoiled and uneaten and the senior may not be able to recognize the health hazard. The senior’s trash should be inspected to look for indications of unsafe behavior. Remember that the senior may be paranoid about others being in their home and overt behaviors like searching through the home and trash may exacerbate the feelings and behavior. The senior does deserve the respect of others even if there are judgment and safety issues. The burned pot may have been thrown in the trash. The medications may have been disposed of rather than taken as directed. Soiled clothing may be disposed of because the senior is embarrassed or is unable to care for their hygiene needs. Money may be disposed of in the garbage or in unusual places in an effort to protect the money.
