The indication for palliative care is that the senior or individual does not wish to have extensive care or treatment. Palliation does not mean no treatment or that the senior wishes to die. It means that the senior has elected care to keep him/herself comfortable. They do not wish to have surgical or invasive procedures. They want their psychological or physical pain and disease managed, but do not wish to have heroic measures. They have chosen to execute their autonomy as a healthcare consumer and individual. Acute conditions will continue to be treated. If the senior has a bladder infection or severe respiratory infection, these would be treated to maintain their comfort. However, if they need open heart surgery, this would not be done as palliative recipient. Palliative care is sometimes called comfort care.
There are physicians who have expertise in palliative care. These specialists may be consulted to evaluate care options by maximizing comfort and symptom management for the senior.
