Weight loss in a frail elderly individual is not a good sign. As we age the percentage of fat to muscle ratio changes. In seniors, the weight loss is often muscle loss as opposed to loss of body fat. The outcome of that weight loss is weakness and increased probability of falls and difficulty healing if there is an injury. Protein is the building block of the body.
As healthcare providers, we can attempt to regain strength with physical therapy, using the extremities and walking. But, if the protein level is too low, the senior cannot regain the loss of strength regardless of how hard we work together.
There are some laboratory tests that can be ordered to assess the level of protein to assess “normal” ranges. These tests are blood tests and they measure the level of albumin and pre albumin which are indicators of protein body stores. These tests are not diagnostic, but they provide the healthcare team with an indication of stores and need for supplementation to rebuild stores.
Stores of protein, the ability of the body to utilize the protein, and the loss of protein are not simple processes. They are complex and multiple medications and conditions have an impact on the proteins in our body. Simply adding a protein drink may not be adequate to rebuild stores. A dietitian is an important member of the team and should be consulted for assessment and development of plans for manage dietary protein intake.
Nutrition is a major element of our ability to perform our daily tasks and for longevity. The team is responsible for overseeing this important element. There are many reasons for low protein in the body. Families can bring high protein foods that their loved one enjoys. Always ask the healthcare team about this food from home to make sure that there are not risks to the senior with the food. There may be consistency issues, there may be intolerance, and there may be diseases or conditions that impact this practice. Ask the team for advice and help us to help your loved one.
