Procrastination is a universal problem when it is time to make difficult decisions. One of those decisions is the discussion about delegating healthcare decisions. The Power of Attorney for Healthcare is a very important document for everyone regardless of age.
In the power of attorney for healthcare, an adult defines who they want to make healthcare decisions for them when they are not able to do that for themselves. This does not mean at the end of life. It could be after a surgical procedure, after an automobile accident or any other time when one cannot share their wishes with the healthcare team.
This document assigns an individual, or agent, to make healthcare decisions when one is unable to speak for oneself. It is important that the person who is the agent is aware of their responsibility and are willing and able to carry out the tasks. Identify a primary and a secondary agent in case the primary agent is not able or willing to fulfill the role. It is best not to have two individuals as co decision makers because decisions will get confusing. Trying to get two individuals to agree can add time and stress to wishes which were clear when written.
Do not keep the Power of Attorney document in the safe deposit box where no one can find it. Share it with the agents, friends, neighbors, your attorney and your doctor. Do not assume that the hospital will be able to find a copy. Keep a copy with you.
This is such important work to be done. We live with independence, autonomy and dignity throughout our life span and this tool helps maintain that at the difficult times in the journey.
