Because the ability to fight off infections lessens as we age, seniors are more at risk for illnesses related to food and food products that younger people may find safe.
Some of the foods and food products that we should monitor carefully include the following:
1. Listeria from pre-packed salad mixtures, raw milk, and frozen vegetables. While these are convenience foods, they may not have been washed adequately and be contaminated with this organism. As we look to organic and more “natural” based foods risks can occur that can be deadly for the elderly.
2. Salmonella from powdered protein meal replacements. These products may be used when the senior is not eating well as an option for weight and protein enhancement.
3. E. coli has been found in raw wheat flour. With no processing of the wheat berry or flour, this risk increases.
4. Salmonella from chicken kept in the back yard. Children and seniors are both at risk for foodborne illnesses, and chickens are a major carrier.
5. Sprouts have been tired to some infections and should only be consumed by the elderly when cooked.
This is data from the Centers for Disease Control, and Prevention and the site should be accessed periodically to monitor for foods at risk. Recalls are also posted here and can help with screening. If you need more information about what foods can be dangerous for seniors, please contact us here.
