What is a NSAID for heaven’s sake? Another one of those medical abbreviations that confuse those of you who are not clinicians! NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). They include medications over the counter medications like aspirin, Aleve, Motrin and ibuprofen. Because they are over the counter and can be purchased without a prescription, consumers consider them safe. Not so!
This class of drugs does not include Tylenol. It does not have the anti-inflammatory activity. However, Tylenol is not safe in doses over 4000 mg or 4 gm daily. Many medications have Tylenol as part of their ingredients so check labels closely. Excessive Tylenol dosing can lead to liver failure and death. The generic name for Tylenol is acetaminophen. This dosing level is only a guideline, and your body’s ability to handle Tylenol may require even lower doses for safety.
NSAIDs increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure. There is an increased chance of suffering from one of these conditions the longer the person is on the drug or drugs. Layering or taking more than one of these medications also increases the overall risk. Even if you are not at risk for these conditions, these drugs increase your risk of heart attack, stroke and heart failure. Those with pre-existing heart disease and stroke are at an even greater risk.
Studies demonstrate that taking these drugs within the first year after a first heart attack increases the risk of death compared to those who did not take these drugs. This information is promoted by the Food and Drug Administration and is available at their website.
If you are taking low-dose aspirin as prevention as a blood thinner, sometimes this is ok, and your healthcare provider can explain it to you. Do not stop your low dose aspirin without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
Another substantial side effect of NSAIDs is gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers in the stomach. These drugs are very irritating to the lining of the stomach and can cause ulcers. These ulcers can bleed and lead to death. They can also be very painful and lead to weight loss and loss of appetite. Do not overlook these symptoms if you are taking any of these medications.
Contact your healthcare provider and make sure they are aware of all the medications you take including those purchased over the counter. Protect your health! As you can see, even the most innocuous sounding drugs can be lethal if taken incorrectly. Do not assume anything when it comes to medications and their side effects.
