Regardless of the cause of dementia, there is some level of social boundary loss for many individuals. What this means is that they act in an inappropriate way for an adult. They never behaved like this before, and it is difficult to understand why they are not “normal.” They are normal for their disease, but they can no longer function as adults with the social boundaries that were learned.
Often this loss of social boundaries is demonstrated through language. The person with dementia may begin to act outside of social norms exhibiting behavior such as:
These are all symptoms of dementia. They may be early symptoms that occur before memory loss is identified. These are symptoms that should stimulate a family to have the individual assessed for a dementing condition. It may be reversible meaning there is a condition which is treatable. If the battery of testing does not demonstrate a treatable condition, there are processes, systems, and documents that need to be executed prospectively before the disease progresses further and the individual is no longer able to speak for them self.
Early identification of dementia is very important and ignoring warning signs is certainly understandable due to the fear and pain of the diagnosis. However, waiting too long can limit the treatment and dignity for the individual who is suffering from these diseases. If you are concerned about your loved one, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
